We believe that learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. At Newchurch Primary School, it is our intent to provide a high-quality languages education which fosters children’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world.  All pupils are expected to achieve their full potential by encouraging high expectations and excellent standards in their foreign language learning. Our teaching of the curriculum enables children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It provides them with opportunities to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language.

At Newchurch, the language that is taught is Spanish. Although MFL is only compulsory in Key Stage Two, we believe that introducing language earlier in Key Stage One is more useful to children as they can progress further in their learning.

It is the intention that all children at Newchurch have the opportunity to learn Spanish through songs, speech, games and other activities.  It is our aim to make learning a new language fun and useful in the children’s lives. All children will access quality first teaching of Spanish in order to adequately prepare and lay the foundations for secondary education; the ultimate aim being that pupils will feel willing and able to continue studying languages beyond Key Stage 2. We aim to instil and foster pupil’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world beyond the United Kingdom opening up their knowledge and experiences to other cultures.

We follow the Language Angels Scheme of Work as our languages curriculum which is designed to progressively develop children’s skills in languages, through regular taught lessons. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary in a variety of topics.
