At Newchurch Primary School we believe that teaching and learning in history is important as history is all around us. We believe that the study of history ignites children’s curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world. Through finding out about how and why the world, our country, culture and local community have developed over time, children understand how the past influences the present. We further believe that learning about history enables children to develop a context for their growing sense of identity and a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people. What they learn through history can influence their decisions about personal choices, attitudes and values.

At Newchurch Primary our intention is to provide a broad curriculum which stimulates the children’s curiosity in order for them to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding and learn what it means to be a historian. They will be immersed in learning which develops their chronological awareness and build an overview of world history.

The history provision is enriched through educational visits, visitors, local history studies and the links with local museums, where the children gain hands on experiences of what life in the past was like.
