Safeguarding Crew

Congratulations to our Junior Safety Officers 2024-2025 who were crowned winners of the Warrington JSOs.
Junior Safety Officers

Our Junior Safety Officers (JSOs)  play an important role in promoting a culture of safety, responsibility and awareness among our Newchurch Robins. The JSOs act as role models and ambassadors of safety both within the school and in the wider community.

Objectives of the Junior Safety Officer Program

The primary aim of the Junior Safety Officer program is to:

  • Foster a sense of responsibility among students for their own safety and that of others.

  • Promote awareness about various safety topics such as road safety, fire safety, stranger danger and emergency procedures.

  • Encourage leadership and teamwork by involving students in safety-related activities.

  • Support staff in monitoring safe behavior during school hours, including in corridors, on playgrounds and during arrival/dismissal.

Roles and Responsibilities

Junior Safety Officers are usually appointed through teacher nomination, student elections or volunteering. Once trained, their responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting teachers and school staff in identifying and reporting hazards.

  • Encouraging peers to follow school safety rules.

  • Participating in drills (e.g., fire or lockdown drills) and helping ensure orderly evacuation.

  • Leading campaigns or assemblies on safety topics.

  • Monitoring safe behavior during lunch breaks, transitions, and on the school bus (if applicable).

  • Providing friendly reminders to peers about things like using pedestrian crossings, walking instead of running indoors and keeping play areas safe.

Training and Support

JSOs typically receive basic training from teachers, local safety officers or community organisations such as the police, fire service or local councils. Training may cover:

  • Basic first aid awareness

  • Emergency contact procedures

  • Road and traffic safety

  • How to report concerns to adults

  • Peer leadership skills

They are supported by a supervising staff member who guides them in their duties and ensures they do not take on responsibilities beyond their capacity.

Benefits of the Program

Implementing a Junior Safety Officer program can have a number of positive outcomes, including:

  • Greater peer-to-peer engagement around safety topics

  • Increased student confidence and communication skills

  • Enhanced community involvement and respect for rules

  • A proactive approach to minimizing accidents and unsafe behavior

Junior Safety Officers empower students to take an active role in making their school a safer and more supportive environment. While they do not replace adult supervision, their presence reinforces a shared responsibility for safety and builds a stronger, more aware school community from an early age.

Cheshire Police Talk

Children in Year 5 and Year 6 received a brilliant talk from Cheshire Police which focused on the dangers of the misuse of social media and the importance of keeping themselves safe online.
